Fusarium Head Blight Products for 2023

With fungicide season starting soon, we wanted to give an overview of the Fusarium Head Blight products currently available. Over the past five years, the fungicide market has drastically changed, with products coming off patent, generics entering the market, and new modes of action becoming available. We currently have access to 12 different products, significantly expanding our options for managing FHB. In this article, we highlight 9 of the top FHB products for 2023 to help you decide which is the best fit for your farm.

The following are listed in alphabetical order:

1. Caramba (BASF)
  • Crops: Wheat, Durum, Barley, Oats, Corn, Triticale, Rye
  • Active Ingredient: Metconazole
  • Diseases suppressed: Fusarium Head Blight (FHB), fusarium ear rot, spot blotch, gibberella ear rot
  • Diseases controlled: Leaf rust, net blotch, powdery mildew, scald, stripe rust, crown rust, septoria leaf and glume blotch, septoria leaf spot, stem rust, stripe rust, tan spot.
  • Surfactant needed: No
  • Application rate: 20ac/jug (405mL/ac) at the fusarium rate
  • Price: $
  • Additional benefits: Economical fusarium product that ties into the BASF programming with Invigor and Liberty purchases.
2. Miravis Ace (Syngenta)
  • Crops: Wheat, Barley, Oats
  • Active Ingredients: Pydiflumentofen, Propiconazole
  • Diseases suppressed: Fusarium Head Blight (FHB), ergot.
  • Diseases controlled: Septoria leaf spot, glume blotch, tan spot, leaf rust, stem rust, stripe rust, powdery mildew, scald, spot blotch, net blotch, crown rust.
  • Surfactant needed: Yes
  • Application rate: 20ac/jug + a non-ionic surfactant at 0.125% v/v
  • Price: $$$
  • Additional benefits: The Miravis products contain a unique mode of action that binds to the plant surface and moves rapidly into the leaf, resulting in preventative and long-lasting disease protection.
3. Miravis Era (Syngenta)
  • Crops: Wheat, Barley
  • Active Ingredients: Pydiflumentofen, Prothioconazole
  • Diseases suppressed: Fusarium Head Blight (FHB)
  • Diseases controlled: Leaf Rust, septoria leaf blotch, tan spot.
  • Surfactant needed: Yes
  • Application rate: 40ac/case + a non-ionic surfactant at 0.125% v/v
  • Price: $$$
  • Additional benefits: Miravis Era combines two modes of action to suppress Fusarium Head blight and late season leaf diseases. At the time of publication for the Saskatchewan Crop Protection Guide, Miravis Era was not registered on barley, but it has since been approved.
4. Orius (Adama)

  • Active Ingredient: Tebuconazole
  • Diseases suppressed: Fusarium Head Blight (FHB)
  • Diseases controlled: Leaf rust, net blotch, powdery mildew, scald, septoria glume blotch, septoria leaf blotch, spot blotch, stem rust, stripe rust, tan spot.
  • Surfactant needed: Yes
  • Application rate: 80ac/jug

  • Additional benefits: An economical choice for foliar leaf disease and suppression of fusarium head blight.
5. Prosaro Pro (Bayer)
  • Crops: Wheat, Oats, Triticale, Barley**
  • Active Ingredients: Fluopyram, Prothioconazole, Tebuconazole
  • Diseases suppressed: Fusarium Head Blight (FHB), ergot.
  • Diseases controlled: Leaf blotch, leaf rust, net blotch, powdery mildew, scald, septoria leaf blotch, septoria glume blotch, spot blotch, stem rust, stripe rust, tan spot.
  • Surfactant needed: Yes
  • Application rate: 20ac/jug + a non-ionic surfactant at 0.125% v/v
  • Price: $$$
  • Additional benefits: Unlike older fungicides, Prosaro Pro provides suppression of ergot.
  • **Notes: Prosaro Pro is registered on barley, but certain countries will not accept grain treated with it yet. Unless you know that the product is being used locally, it’s best to use a different fungicide on barley for 2023.
6. Prosaro XTR (Bayer)
  • Crops: Wheat, Durum, Barley, Oats
  • Active Ingredients: Prothioconazole, Tebuconazole
  • Diseases suppressed: Fusarium Head Blight (FHB)
  • Diseases controlled: Septoria leaf blotch, glume blotch, tan spot, leaf rust, stripe rust, powdery mildew, crown rust, net blotch, scald, spot blotch, stem blotch, stem rust.
  • Surfactant needed: No
  • Application rate: 20ac/jug (325mL/ac)
  • Price: $$
  • Additional benefits: Prosaro XTR includes mefenpyr-diethyl which improves stress metabolism and helps boost yield.
7. Sphaerex (BASF)
  • Crops: Wheat, Barley, Oats, Rye, Triticale
  • Active Ingredients: Metconazole, Prothioconazole
  • Diseases suppressed: Fusarium Head Blight (FHB), ergot.
  • Diseases controlled: Leaf rust, net blotch, powdery mildew, scald, spot blotch, stripe rust, crown rust, septoria leaf blotch and black stem, tan spot
  • Surfactant needed: No
  • Application rate: 40ac/jug (216mL/ac) at the fusarium rate
  • Price: $$
  • Additional benefits: Sphaerex provides suppression of ergot and is the only product that has rye registrations for on label (for ergot).
8. Soraduo (Adama)
  • Crops: Wheat, Barley
  • Active Ingredient(s): Prothioconazole, Tebuconazole
  • Diseases suppressed: Fusarium Head Blight
  • Diseases controlled: Crown rust, leaf rust, net blotch, powdery mildew, scald, septoria glume blotch, septoria leaf blotch (and black stem), spot blotch, stem rust, stripe rust, tan spot.
  • Surfactant needed: Optional. It is not required but can be added at 0.125%v/v.
